Four decade-strong watchmaker Raymond Weil recently revealed a sporty chronograph dedicated to its namesake founder. While the late Mr. Weil is remembered for his musicianship through music-themed timepieces, the new Raymond Weil Freelance Piper commemorates his enthusiasm for aviation. A 45mm automatic chronograph developed in collaboration with leading aircraft manufacturer Piper Aviation Inc., the Freelance Piper was designed to evoke the cockpits of the various planes that Mr. Weil (1926-2014) had flown. While its hour and minute pointers were fashioned to resemble Piper Aviation-style rotor blades, its red GMT band took artistic direction from dashboard compasses. Also brandishing a tachmeter bezel and altimeter gauge-looking small seconds sub-dial at its 9 o’clock position, the hardy watch which is water-resistant to a depth of 100m employs lithe but robust case metals crafted from the aerospace materials of stainless steel and titanium, and its leather strap is perforated in the style of cockpit seats. The Raymond Weil Freelance Piper is limited to a run of 1,500 pieces, and comes in a special box together with a model Raymond Weil Piper airplane. This 46-hour power reserve timepiece will retail later this year for around USD3,495.
