Destined to be a blockbuster hit when it opens in cinemas this August, Agent 47 is the first mainstream film to have almost half of its scenes filmed in Singapore. The rest of the movie’s scenes were recorded in Berlin. The Millenary stalked the well-dressed Rupert Friend and his film crew, and reveals the exact locations where this revival of the immensely popular Hitman video game franchise was shot.

For two weeks from late April to early May 2014, Singapore played host to Hollywood stars like Rupert Friend, Zachary Quinto and Hannah Ware, along with director Aleksander Bach’s cast and crew of over 200 people.

The movie’s trailer, which was unveiled last week, revealed outdoor shots of the Central Business District and Esplanade area. While indoor filming took place in Infinite Frameworks Studios off Portsdown Road, Aleksander Bach picked Singapore’s iconic Robinson Road and McCallum Street, where the film’s massive outdoor fight sequence spills over into Chinatown’s Pagoda Street.
Another world-famous location chosen by the relatively new Polish director was Changi International Airport. The new Agent 47, whom Rupert Friend takes over from previous Hitman actor Timothy Olyphant, enters Singapore through Terminal 3 of the World’s Best Airport award.

An unusual shoot venue was the Institute of Technical Education (Central). A sizeable modernist building, students were cordoned from certain areas of the school to make way for a frantic scramble. Lead female Katia van Dees played by Hannah Ware escapes after being tied up, leading to a melee through ITE Central’s corridors.
The glass dome of Marina Barrage was the setting of Katia’s father’s lair, while Gardens by the Bay was the backdrop of a large-scale fight scene. Singapore’s renowned manmade gardens are also where Katia first sees her father.

The choice hotel for the film was Park Royal, where the sensual pool scene of Katia was shot. She eventually realises that her name, when pronounced in a certain European language (we won’t spoilt it for you), reveals her true identity as well as her likely fate in the eventual sequel to Agent 47.
