The Island Foundation, which was founded in 2010 by owners of private holiday resort Nikoi Island, recently partnered with storied jeweller Swarovski in a bid to raise funds for seafaring natives of the Riau Islands. This ambitious collaboration yielded an opulent fishing net of 14,000 Swarovski crystals. The intricately woven net, which took two years to complete, will be auctioned off to benefit the Orang Laut, or Sea People, of the region, whose main challenges in modern times are inflation and over-fishing. The Island Foundation has been enthusiastically scouring for economic and social opportunities for the Orang Laut, who live below the poverty margins. The Swarovski Crystal Fishing Net and its accompanying photo exhibition of the Orang Suku Laut community, will be on display from now until 16th January 2015 at the National Museum of Singapore. Admission to admire these works of art is free.
